The museum is the country’s oldest museum and was founded in 1887 and is dedicated to presenting the history and the culture of the country of Singapore in a manner that appeals to all.

As a world renowned museum the National carries both permanent exhibition and is able to host many special exhibitions through its contacts with other major museums. Some of the permanent exhibitions at the National Museum of Singapore include the Goh Seng Choo gallery; which hosts a fine collection of drawings of natural history commissioned by Singapore’s first Commandant William Farquhar (free entry); The Singapore History Gallery (this shows the story of Singapore’s rich history from the 14th century to the present day); and the Singapore Living Galleries: these are dedicated to the subjects of Fashion; Film; Photography; and Food.

Getting to the Museum

The National museum of Singapore is located at 93 Stamford Road. This location can easily be reached by MRT and the museum is about a 5 minute walk from the following stations: Bras Basah; Dhoby Ghaut; it is a 10 minute walk from the City Hall MRT station.

If you prefer to reach the museum by bus then you need to get off at the YMCA (08041) or SMU bus stops (04121). These are served by the following SBS bus routes: 7, 14, 14e, 16, 36, 111, 124, 128, 162, 162M, 174, 174e, 175. And the SMRT buses 77, 106, 167, 171, 190, 700, 700a, and NR7. In addition to this the YMCA stop is served by SBS  64, 65 and 139; and the SMRT NR6 Service. The SMU bus stop is also covered by SBS routes 131 and 166; and by SMRT 857.

The history part of the museum is open daily from 10am to 6pm. However the Singapore Living Gallery opening hours are from 10am to 8pm and offers free admission from 6pm.

Admission price at the National Museum of Singapore

It costs $10 to enter the exhibition areas for adults; $30 for a family; and $5 for OAP’s above 60. Children below the age of 6, Students and Singapore residents above the age of 60 are entitled to free admission.
